According to The Columbus Dispatch, in mid October, the McDonald’s in Gahanna added a little “green” to their yellow and red persona. The restaurant was redesigned to be environmentally friendly as part of the international burger chain’s efforts to reduce the ecological footprint of each of its restaurants.
The business is now landscaped with herbs and native plants, and is equipped to collect and recycle rainwater. McDonald’s is “rolling out some green elements, and the company felt Gahanna would be a good location to try some of these things out,” said Marshela Webb, operations manager for the Gahanna location.
The landscape now has a rain garden, which is designed to collect and filter storm-water runoff from hard surfaces, such as the parking lot and sidewalks. This will in turn divert the water away from the city’s storm drains.
The restaurant also will be collecting rainwater in a system that can store up to 5,200 gallons, which can be used to water plants through the site’s irrigation system. For future green projects, the company is testing the transformation of used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel.
